Do you have some one who believes in you? Who believes and encourages the vision God gives you?

Gabriel, an angel of the Lord came to Elizabeth's husband Zechariah. The angel told him his wife Elizabeth would have a child. His response, doubt. See Zechariah considered his own body and that of his barren wife. In spite of the fact that this was an answer to Zechariah's own prayers.

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” The angel answered, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time.”-- Luke 1:11-20

So Elizabeth's husband didn't believe at first. But Elizabeth did. The same thing was happened with Mary.  She believed God but Joseph, well no so much at first.  In the same book, Luke 1: 26-38 you can read about how the Angel of the Lord Gabriel appeared to Mary. Mary believed his words and was told by the angel about Elizabeth's pregnancy.

Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.”-- Luke 1:36-37

Joseph was I think confused in Matthew. What man wouldn't be.  We read he wanted to put her away to keep her from shame. Not hers I think but his. Because the angel of the Lord said to him don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife.

Matthew 1: 16-21 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

So we have two women in highly unusual circumstances. Yet they came together in support of each other.  Mary when she heard of Elizabeth's pregnancy left her home and went to see her cousin.  She remained with Elizabeth for three months. She was greeted with high praise and recognized as the Mother of the Lord.

At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!” --Luke 39-45.

How great Mary must have felt. To come from doubt into the house of someone who believed her. Someone who understood because they believed God too. Who believed she had a word from the Lord for her life.  Even when it was a crazy hard thing.  I am not knocking Joseph or Zachariah.  We like to think we would believe something so fantastic, but we probably wouldn't either.

Is there someone in your life that's believing with you and for you?  Like Elizabeth was for Mary. Someone you can call when God drops a dream in your heart. Or something he wants you to believe.

I hadn't thought about that similarity between Mary and Elizabeth. I can only imagine how the two would have really valued the other's support when faced with such challenging circumstances.

Those are all beautiful graphics telling this story, but I like the last one best -- Elizabeth throwing her arms open, while John was leaping. Oh, what faced those two women in the next three decades. So often we ignore Mary -- these women of the Bible are as important today and we should keep them in mind. Thanks!! A pleasure visiting with you.
